NHL roundup: Islanders win again to push streak to 9

Oliver Wahlstrom scored the decisive goal in the shootout Sunday night for the visiting New York Islanders, who overcame a pair of unexpected absences and then dodged defeat early in overtime before extending their winning streak to nine games with a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils in Newark, N.J.

Kieffer Bellows and Brock Nelson scored in the first period and Anthony Beauvillier forced a fourth round in the shootout by scoring for the Islanders. Goalie Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves before stopping three of four shots in the shootout.

The Islanders played without center Jean-Gabriel Pageau and defenseman Noah Dobson, who were placed on the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list. Pageau was never listed on New York’s roster while Dobson took warmups before being scratched.

Janne Kuokkanen and Yegor Sharangovich also scored for the Devils, who lost their franchise-record 11th straight game at home. Nikita Gusev scored on the first shot of the shootout before New Jersey went 0-for-3 the rest of the way. Goalie Scott Wedgewood made 32 saves in defeat.

Hurricanes 2, Red Wings 1

Dougie Hamilton scored an unassisted short-handed goal, Alex Nedeljkovic came within 10 seconds of a shutout and Carolina extended its winning streak to eight games by edging host Detroit.

Nino Niederreiter scored the other goal for Carolina, which has won three of four meetings against Detroit this season. Nedeljkovic made 25 saves as the Hurricanes won without a power-play tally for the first time during the streak, going 0-for-1.

Anthony Mantha had the lone goal for Detroit, while Jonathan Bernier made 30 saves.

Stars 2, Blue Jackets 1 (SO)

Alexander Radulov scored the lone goal on the last shot of the shootout as Dallas defeated host Columbus to split a two-game series with its Central Division rivals.

Joe Pavelski tallied in regulation for the Stars and Jake Oettinger made 29 saves. Dallas won a one-goal game for the first time since Jan. 26 and improved to 3-3-6 in those situations. The Stars had lost their previous six games that extended past regulation.

Zach Werenski got the lone goal for Columbus and Joonas Korpisalo stopped 34 shots. The Blue Jackets lost for the fourth time in their past five games (1-2-2), the only victory in that span a 4-3 overtime decision against the Stars on Saturday.

Senators 4, Maple Leafs 3

Goaltender Joey Daccord recorded his first career victory in an emergency start, while Brady Tkachuk and Ryan Dzingel scored first-period goals seven seconds apart and Drake Batherson tallied twice to lead host Ottawa over struggling Toronto.

The 24-year-old Daccord, who was given the net because Matt Murray was injured in warmup, stopped 33 shots for the Senators to record his milestone.

The Maple Leafs, who led the league standings a couple of weeks ago, have dropped five of six games, all in regulation time, and could relinquish the North Division lead by the time they return to action on Friday.

Wild 4, Coyotes 1

Kevin Fiala set up Nick Bonino’s tiebreaking goal and later scored in Minnesota’s three-goal third period to fuel a win over visiting Arizona in St. Paul, Minn.

Nick Bonino and Joel Eriksson Ek scored for the Wild, as did Victor Rask to snap his 10-game goal-less drought to back goalie Cam Talbot, who made 21 saves. Minnesota improved to 11-2-1 in its last 14 games and has won three of four against Arizona.

Phil Kessel scored in the first period and Antti Raanta stopped 31 of 34 shots for the Coyotes.

Avalanche 4, Kings 1

Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovsky had a goal and an assist each, Nathan MacKinnon and Joonas Donskoi also scored, and host Colorado beat Los Angeles in snowy Denver.

Philipp Grubauer had 27 saves for the Avalanche.

Kurtis MacDermid had a goal and Cal Petersen stopped 37 shots for Los Angeles.
